ROP launches road safety campaign
(23/5/2012)Lt General Hassan bin Mohsin Al Shiraiqi, Inspector General of Police and Customs and Chairman of the National Committee for Road Safety, yesterday presided over the launch of the Traffic Control Plan.
A documentary on road accidents was screened during the launch ceremony. Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Hosni, under secretary of the Ministry of Health, hailed the efforts of Royal Oman Police (ROP) in maintaining road safety and creating awareness about road safety.
He said, "The ministry is planning expansion of emergency departments at the various health institutions, adding "eliminating accidents is a challenging issue that requires combined efforts.
Colonel Mohammed bin Awadh Al Rowas, Director General of Traffic, pointed out to the ROP's efforts in maintaining traffic safety for all road users, particularly by intensifying of traffic patrols during the last few months as part of the Traffic Control Plan. The ROP is spreading road safety awareness in the community by training drivers on safe driving and rescuing injured persons.
He said that the ROP's efforts also comprise installation of radars, conducting traffic research in cooperation with the Research Council, as well as exchange of information with insurance companies, among other efforts. "We hope that increase of traffic patrols will be completed soon and more traffic patrol cars will be deployed on all main roads. This will help monitor irresponsible driving.
He informed that the officers of the traffic patrols had undergone intensive training and attended training sessions for four months.
