The three friends did what they had agreed upon; the crow sowed a date
seed, the fox sowed a bone, and the sparrow sowed a stick. Then they
went away for years. Years later, they returned to their place, eager to
know the results of their plants. When they arrived, each of them started
looking for what he planted and there was a surprise.
The fox dug searching for the bone he planted and found it very smelly
and eaten by the earth which made him very sad, the sparrow found the
stick he planted dry and lifeless. So, he looked at it with teary eyes and
a sad heart. As for the crow, he found his date seed has grown into a
green palm caressed by the breeze and embraced by the sun which
ripened its fruits. He flew proud of his work, boasting of what he had
achieved. The fox and the sparrow looked at him sympathetically,
perhaps he would give them some of his fruit, but he began mocking
and making fun of their stupid ideas. He said: Reap now what your
hands have sown, he even said to the fox: Open your mouth, and I will
throw you some fruits of my generous palm. When the fox opened his
mouth hoping for the generosity of the crow, but the crow laughed at
his naivety. The Fox and the sparrow were greatly disappointed, and
said: How could we not have thought carefully about the results of what
we would do? We would not reap figs and grapes from planting a bone
that has no good and a stick that has no life. We must think well to do
well; so as not to be mocked by others.
